Good on him. Here is the article from the Herald newspaper.

Lentil king shuns fortune

THE founder of a popular restaurant chain has given away the profits and lives in a tent.

Shanaka Fernando, 37, the man behind self-styled hip vegetarian Lentil As Anything chain, said he was not interested in making money or material possessions.

"It just doesn't make sense to me -- I can't take a million-dollar-mansion to my grave," he said.

Shunning modern comforts, Mr Fernando camps in a tent on Elwood foreshore. He has a few changes of clothing, a collection of books and a torch.

"I like to live in a manner that is free and non-committal," he said.

"Life is short. I feel having possessions is a weight."

Mr Fernando said his ritual included icy morning dips in Port Phillip Bay.

His close-to-nature lifestyle has raised the ire of local authorities, with Port Phillip Council attempting to evict him because camping is outlawed in the area.

He has had one tent confiscated by the council and received a further early morning eviction visit this week.

He moves camp sites to thwart council officers and has called in his lawyer.

"We are exploring the possibility of challenging council's right to claim ownership of the land," he said.

"I have written permission to camp from the Aboriginal owners of this area."

Mr Fernando founded the co-operative behind the lentil restaurant in St Kilda. A second outlet has opened in Brunswick. Customers are asked to pay what they believe their meal was worth.

Mr Fernando said the St Kilda business had turned over almost $2 million in the past four years, with profits distributed to community and artistic projects.

He was raised in a wealthy Sri Lankan family and came to Australia in 1989 to study law.

Yes, but websites often archive articles after a period of time. The Sydney Morning Herald at www.smh.com.au have free articles on their site then change the link a bit later on and you have to register to view it. This way we can display the article in case they change the link later on.

I went to Lentil As Anything for the first time on the weekend. The food was fantastic! However, the cigarette smoke from the bar was intolerable!!!! Is that legal?

Hmm, i really cannot stand cigarette smoke either (as I'm sure most people here will attest to also).

Not sure regarding the legality of it at the moment though.

I found this:
"Q8: How does the legislation apply to a restaurant that has a bar area which is not separately enclosed?
If the restaurant has an 'on-premises' licence and a bar area, the restaurant including a bar area which is not separately enclosed is required to be smoke-free. The definition of a restaurant or café contained within the legislation states that:

'in the case of a restaurant or café that is an area in premises, includes any abutting area in those premises that is not separately enclosed from that area, irrespective of the purpose or purposes for which the abutting area is used'.

For example, if a restaurant business occupies two levels and there is a dining area on the ground floor and a bar on the first level, smoking would generally be permitted in the bar area as in this case the bar area is a non dining facility and is physically, separately enclosed.

However, if a restaurant has tables and chairs on one level and a bar located on a mezzanine or split level, both areas are required to be smoke-free as the mezzanine or split level bar area is not separately enclosed from the dining area."

So I would assume it is not allowable. I won't go back again, which is a shame because the food was so good.

That's pretty bad then! If you can be bothered, i'd write a quick letter to them with all that info and let them know how it affected your experience there.

I'd have left less money too, as smoke certainly undermines the 'dining experience' Wink
